PVDF lined FRP Ducting Used in New Magnesium Extraction Process

Working with the Canadian Mining Giant Noranda, Prolite Plastics Ltd. solved a rare high temperature application encountered at the Magnola Metallurgy Plant.

Prolite Plastics Ltd. designed a challenging PVDF lined FRP dual laminate duct system to handle hot hydrochloric gases with temperature design conditions of 115°C (240°F) and pressure design conditions of 230 kPag (33.4 psi) and -45 kPag (-6.5 psi).

PVDF Flex resin was chosen to contain the low pH HCl gas and Dow Derakane 510N resin with Antimony Trioxide additive, a high temperature fire retardant structural FRP resin, was used to withstand the constant operature temperature.

The dual laminate ducting system was chosen over a PVDF loose liner steel system because the bond strength of the fabric backed PVDF liner would withstand the vacuum requirement and a dual laminate ducting system is significantly lighter than a PVDF lined steel duct system.
